Post Monaco GP and the Indy 500

I attended my first Indy 500 this past weekend, which occurred on the same day as the Monaco GP. There is a perennial debate about whether Indy or F1 is best, and now I feel I can enter the debate :-)

Firstly, I missed the most exciting Monaco GP in years (Monaco + Rain – traction control = Exciting Race) and instead joined 300 000 people in Indianapolis for “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”.

There were 8 yellow flag incidents and for the majority of the race the longest green flag run was 19 laps. It took them almost 6 laps to remove a mirror from the track – COME ON GUYS!

There were six accidents and 9 drivers lead the race. There was some evidence of overtaking but they also do it in the pits a lot. Get off the racing line, run too high and you’re going to hit the wall!

Ultimately, for me, it was no more interesting or boring than an F1 race!

I was supporting Tomas Scheckter, and had an opportunity on the Saturday to speak to him. What a lovely man, and a very good racing driver. He started 11th and was running 3rd when he went in for his final pitstop, during which a driveshaft was broken, and he was out!

I realise I have only experienced one race, but it is “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, and I’ll stick with F1 :-)
